MagSafe and OhSnap! fight for the back of my phone

iPhone with OhSnap Grip

My Love for OhSnap!

I started my iPhone journey with an OhSnap Grip that I brought over from my Pixel 4. I absolutely love the grip. It gives the convenience of a Pop-Socket without the bulk. I cannot remember where I heard about the OhSnap! Kickstarter, but I was sold as soon as I saw it. I had been a PopSocket user, but hated the constant bulk. I also felt like the PopSocket is too flimsy and cheap quality (I have broken at least three).

One of my favorite aspects of the OhSnap Grip is the magnets within the grip that allow it to magnetically connect to anything that is magnetized. I use this feature when I am cooking by placing it on my microwave and pull up recipes or to get caught up on my YouTube playlists. It also comes in handy while out to open the flashlight and hang it.

I also use the kickstand function as a kickstand as well as a fidget accessory. There is a very satisfying click when put in the kickstand mode that can easily be engaged and disengaged by a simple flip of a finger. I use my phone as my primary media player whether that be music or podcasts and keep the screen on with the kickstand engaged if I am not at my desk. This provides a perfect angle to see what is playing and having quick access to skip/next.

OhSnap Accessories

I also liked the accessories that having a grip on my phone would allow. I have purchased multiple Snapmounts placed around my house. I have one on my nightstand so that it snaps into place and I do not worry about knocking it off my table. It also allows me to know exactly where my phone is whenever I get up in the morning and groggily grab at it for my morning Twitter fix.

My last purchase was the Snapstand on my work desk. I absolutely love it. It has a very strong magnetic grip and a ball that allows placement of the phone is many different possible positions - horizontally or vertically. In my vehicle I have a Snapmount connected to a CD player mount so that all I have to do is put it up there and I am good to go.

I purchased the Snapcharge in the Kickstarter, but it won't work with the Incipio case that I currently use due to the case being too thick. I do not mind too much as I never have been all in on wireless charging for my phone. The Snapcharge is currently in the kitchen as has turned into my wife and I's AirPods Pro wireless charger. That convenience is perfect to just plop the headphones down every few days to make sure that they are topped off. I am fine to manually plug in my phone and do not see it as much of a hassle. I plug it in at night, when I am in the car, and rarely on my couch when I do some late night doom scrolling while trying to avoid the latest Hallmark movie my wife is engulfed in.

OhSnap Faults

All the above is perfectly fine with me. The issue I have is introducing my wallet to this situation. I only have a few cards that I want to take with me when we go shopping or I head out for work. Insurance cards, extra credit cards, etc. are in a second wallet that I only need at certain times. I see no reason to take my Lowe's credit card with me when we are heading out to Target. This has been a bit of a transition as I used to be the person that took everything with me all the time 'just in case' I might need it.

SnapWallet

I would love to have a "SnapWallet" that connects to the ring on the back of my phone and then have the OhSnap Grip connect to the other side of the wallet. I have rigged up a work around that kinda solves my problem, but it is extremely bulky. I purchased a FIDELO Minimalist Wallet and stuck an OhSnap replacement ring on one side. This allows me to quickly grab my wallet and magnetically connect it to the back on my grip. The magnetic hold is ridiculously good and it is very difficult to remove the wallet from the magnetic hold. This doesn't allow me to use the grip on the wallet, but I can't stand the extra bulk or the thought of have a layer of case > grip > wallet > grip. My setup is already bulky enough and I'm not sure that using the grip would actually help with it being so far from the phone.

I would be so happy if OhSnap created a wallet that works with the grip either sandwiched between the grip and the case or as just an add-on to the case. I do not believe that OhSnap is going to come out with a product exactly like I want but I can hope.

My rigged up OhSnap wallet

Alternatives:

  • Moft phone Stand/wallet - This looks like a great alternative, but it doesn't give me the tight hold that the OhSnap gives. I also lose the outer magnetic attachment that I have grown to love.
  • Pitika MagEZ Wallet 2 - Federico Viticci introduced me to this modular wallet that he discussed on this RelayFM Connected podcast. While I think that this looks interesting and I love the versatility of it, the price is a bit of a stumbling block from jumping all in as well as added some significant bulk. Not a huge fan of carbon fiber either.
  • MagSafe PopSocket - PopSocket has some nice choices with their MagSafe collection. There is the PopCase, PopWallet+, and PopGrip for MagSafe. While I think that these are really intuitive and the PopWallet has me intrigued, I really want the magnets that the OhSnap gives me.

Best of Both Worlds

So, I want the best of both worlds. I want to continue using the grip because even though I am using the iPhone 12 mini, I still like having the security of sliding my finger in to hold my phone. Not to mention that it works great to prop the phone up and has worked perfectly when magnetically mounted and used as a flashlight while fixing wiring at my day job.

My journey has brought me to a search for a simple thin MagSafe 'sheet' that I can attach the OhSnap ring on so that I can get a MagSafe case and then slide the OhSnap Grip on and off as needed and then can use the many MagSafe accessories available. Until I find this specific product or until OhSnap creates a SnapWallet, I am stuck using my giant adaptation.

Any and all ideas or thoughts on how to make this setup better are greatly appreciated! Feel free to leave a comment below or give me a shout on Twitter - @TheTANDOM.
